LOCAL RESOURCES:

What is a community health center? How is this different from a hospital, primary care center or a private practice?

Community Health Centers are clinics staffed with doctors and nurses to treat a variety of medical needs. Centers are conveniently located within different neighborhoods and are ideal if you do not have medical insurance. The doctors and nurses at these facilities treat low-income people regardless of insurance status.

Hospitals are the best place to visit if you have a complex health problem, an emergency or need surgery. Doctors and nurses here specialize in different medical areas. Hospitals are also the best option if you have a health problem that requires long-term care.

Primary Care Centers give basic wellness and illness care and can be located within a hospital or private practice.

Private Practices are smaller businesses that treat specific populations or illnesses. It is best to call these resources in advance and confirm that your health insurance is accepted. If not, you will pay out of pocket costs which can be expensive.

The following resources are an extensive list of health resources (including community health centers, hospitals and primary care centers) in Miami-Dade County. If you have a general health problem and need assistance, it may be best to start with the location that is most convenient for you. If you suspect you have a problem that is more complex, it may be best to find the location of a doctor specializing in your needs.
